The territory of Caneva is home to an extraordinary natural heritage, shaped by landscapes, water, rocks and underground environments that tell a story spanning millions of years. It is a wealth of natural treasures that we often see every day, yet whose origins, characteristics and significance we may not fully appreciate. Understanding our territory means learning to recognise its value, appreciate the processes that have shaped it and develop a greater awareness of the importance of protecting and preserving it for future generations. It is in this spirit that Geo in Caneva was created: a guide designed to take residents, visitors and enthusiasts on a journey through some of the most remarkable sites of our geological heritage. From the springs of the Livenza River, including the picturesque Molinetto spring, to the sinkholes and abysses of Cansiglio, and finally to the Marmorino di Caneva, a unique mineral resource that connects the geological history of our land with the economic and social history of our community. This publication is intended not only as a source of knowledge and discovery, but also as an invitation to look at our landscape with fresh eyes, rediscover familiar places and understand how profoundly geology has contributed to shaping the identity of our territory. The project was made possible thanks to the support of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia – Geological Survey, as part of the initiatives promoted under Regional Law No. 15/2016 for the protection and enhancement of geological heritage. As a Municipal Administration, we firmly believe that investing in the understanding and appreciation of our natural heritage means investing in Caneva’s future, fostering a culture of respect, awareness and responsible, sustainable tourism. We hope that these pages will inspire curiosity and encourage readers to explore, discover and develop an even deeper appreciation of the natural wonders that surround us. Il Sindaco Lucia De Marco Despite its small size, Friuli Venezia Giulia is incredibly rich in geosites. The region’s geological diversity spans nearly half a billion years of natural history, encompassing mountains, caves, coastlines, fossil rivers, and unique rock formations. A law to protect geological heritage In 2016, the Regional government of Friuli Venezia Giulia passed a regional law (No. 15/2016) protecting its geological and speleological heritage. The law recognizes the scientific, cultural, and educational importance of geosites and their promotion and publicizing, including for tourism and planning purposes. Geodiversity is the variety of rocks, minerals, soils, landforms and natural processes that have shaped the Earth over millions of years. It is a precious heritage that preserves the record of our planet’s history and evolution, shaping landscapes and creating the conditions for life to develop.
